The Importance of Digital Marketing
Digital marketing for a game is a concept I’ve previously dismissed as being unimportant, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. These days especially, with how accessible game creation tools are, there’s more people than ever before creating their own game, meaning there’s more competition for publicity and players.
You could create the most amazing game, with revolutionary mechanics and gameplay, but if nobody knows it exists, nobody will play it. This is where marketing comes into play, and with how easy and cheap it is to market a game digitally, there really is no excuse not to put some amount of effort into it.
The average time spent on social media is 116 minutes a day(Wakefield, 2020). That’s almost two hours! With the average person spending this amount of time, it could be very easy to expose them to your game, making social media an especially powerful form of digital marketing. On top of this, social media is completely free, so even if you have absolutely no budget set aside for marketing, you can still invest your time which will help increase profits of your game, which is especially important for indie developers.
